I’d totally like to say that this photoshoot is because of Halloween, but let’s face it, I dress up any chance I can!
It also seems that every time I shoot something super special for The Gothic Shop, it rains. When we shot Dracula’s Daugter, it was raining, and now that we did The Sorceress, it rained again. I had curls, somewhere between the moments I exited the house and arriving at the location, but no amount of hairspray could help. As we stood there, hiding from the rain, wondering how to pull it all off, I decided that we might as well shoot in the rain, because a dress this dramatic deserves a bit of drama from Mother Nature herself.
I don’t think I ever had more trouble thinking of a “character” for a shoot than I did with this dress. I have been deeply and madly in love with Sinister since I was a young babybat. This is their first dress I own, so I wanted to do it proper justice. I must have discarded half a dozen characters and sets and ideas, and the day of the shoot just had me shoving a book, an apple and a dagger in the prop basket, along with a few other things the rain prevented us from using. Upon The Gothic Shop’s recommendation, I went a size down, to XS, and as you can see, the beautiful velvet and taffeta dress is a perfect fit. It features a hidden zipper in the back, and the skirt part is full enough, without becoming too heavy and pulling the rest of the dress down, as velvet is not a light material. The entire dress feels incredibly rich, detailed and high-quality.The lace trim is also heavy and rich, and the dress itself is incredibly comfortable, and made me feel like a proper medieval sorceress.
The jewellery is Poe-inspired, from Alchemy Gothic, with a statement necklace with Swarovski elements and matching earrings, and is called My soul from the shadow.
The Sorceress, thus, is born out of adversity, standing in the rain, reading incantations, breathing her spells into ripe, juicy apples no man could resist, and in the end, enchanting a magical dagger. I am sometimes overly self-conscious when it comes to acting out my characters and ideas, but sometimes I manage to forget that there is a camera and that there are other people around me and I can dive into my fantasy with the same passion and abandon I had when I was a child.
